Mandarin Lights Azalea

The amazing new Northern Lightsâ„¢ Mandarin Lights Azalea (Rhododendron x 'Mandarin Lights'), is a glorious deciduous Azalea that is perfectly suited to colder growing zones! With absolutely stunning, bright mandarin-orange flowers that are lightly scented. The color show each spring and early summer is sure to knock your socks off!

Each sweet, lightly fragrant, reddish-orange bloom is trumpet-shaped and appears in gorgeously full clusters, high atop tall trusses. Bursting onto the scene with an explosion of juicy color even before the leaves have woken up from their winter sleep.

The massive displays of bright, mandarin-orange blooms are irresistible to butterflies, bees, and Hummingbirds! These pollinators will thank you for the spring buffet and everyone will benefit from the bold color show after such a dreary winter!

Naturally having an upright and rounded form, easy-to-grow Mandarin Lights has shiny oval foliage that is a bright green all growing season. This lovely green presence is the perfect backdrop to smaller perennials and shrubs in the landscape.

The Northern Lightsâ„¢ Series of Azalea also has showy, bronze-red to yellow fall foliage that is simply gorgeous in the dappled sun! Extending the color display right up until winter!

How to Use Northern Lightsâ„¢ Mandarin Lights Azalea In The Landscape

Northern Lightsâ„¢ Mandarin Lights Azalea is an exceptional addition to your garden beds for that juicy burst of early spring color! Formal and informal gardens both benefit from the clean, upright form and tidy growing habit.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Mandarin Lights Azalea is one of the renowned Northern Lightsâ„¢ series of very cold-hardy Azaleas bred in Minnesota. It was designed in order to bring this glorious warm-climate shrub all the way into zone 4 through 7. Azalea needs to be situated in filtered sunlight or in part sun to part shade sites, although plants tolerate full sun in areas with cooler summers.

These Alazlea need moist soil, with excellent drainage, good mulching, and a peat moss soil additive. Roots will rot in poorly drained soil, however once established, they can tolerate occasional drought. Azaleas have fine, shallow root systems, so well-drained soil and protective mulch are a must!

Mulch Mandarin Lights well and avoid disturbing its roots, which remain very near the surface. A good layer of mulch, 3-4 inches thick over the entire root zone keeps the roots cool, moist and insulated.

Preferring acidic soils (5.0-6.0 pH), it is best to feed twice a year with an acid fertilizer such as Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic and Natural Premium Fertilizer. Plant in soil that is ideally very rich in organic matter.

Protect Mandarin Lights Azalea since they do not fare well in windy sites or in the drying northern winter winds. Positioning them against homes, garages, or walls and fences for that extra buffer from the gales.

It's best to prune only right after the flowers are done so the new growth that develops after flowering will make flower buds for next spring.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade/Dappled Shade
  • Moist, Well-Drained Soil
  • Prefers Acidic Soil
  • Prune Only Immediately After Flowering
  • Superior Cold Hardiness
